Winter Coat Trends; the Cocoon Coat

It maybe kinda early to be thinking about winter coats but one style I am on the lookout for this year is a cocoon coat.

So far however I have found more pricey versions than affordable ones which makes me wonder if it is still too early to jump on the bandwagon of this trend.

Just like electronics, fashion trends first become popular via runway or high-end designer items before trickling down to the mass market. Sometimes instantly and sometimes it takes a few seasons.

The great thing about a Cocoon Coat is that this is a retro style and you can find original versions at Vintage shops.

What I like about this style is that it is almost oversized in an architectural way and it allows for layering. Sure it doesn’t show off your shape but neither does a puffer jacket and the Cocoon Coat is much more fashionable.

UPDATE for 2015 – I now have a cocoon coat in my closet and I love to pair it with a blanket scarf for cold winter days. This style is forgiving and has lots of room for layering under jackets for work or bulky sweaters for warmth. On the most frigid days this is my first pick. However I would watch as this style tends to have a more open neckline due to its oversized shape. You will need to have a scarf, preferably a big one to close up the neckline to stay warm. I like the look of these coats with a blanket scarf anyways but it adds a practical element considering it would be too cold at the neck without them!
