Back around 2013 the Zara plaid blanket scarf took the internet by storm. It was super popular. The big square style was confusing for some to tie but it also made a big statement. In more recent years oversized rectangle scarves have continued this blanket scarf trend. But are blanket scarves still in style?
Are Blanket Scarves still in Style?
Much like plaid or corduroy, scarves are something that are always in style even if they seem to disappear in the summer months. Personally I wear scarves three seasons of the year although I do have lighter weight ones I use for late spring and early fall.
Blanket scarves tend to be larger and have more material than a standard scarf. They can be square but even oversized rectangle scarves fall into the blanket scarf category. These can be complicated to tie especially if you have never had a blanket scarf before.
I wear scarves for two reasons.
Scarves keep you warm
As someone who lives in a country that has cold winters scarves aren’t just for style, they are for warmth. By October I am definitely wearing a scarf daily, before I even start wearing hats. In fact a big blanket scarf can double up keeping not just your neck warm but also your ears.
I tend to wear my scarves looser when it isn’t as cold and tie them tighter when it is more frigid.
Some coats have lower necklines and a blanket scarf is a saviour to ensure you aren’t open to the elements on a brisk winters day.
If you live somewhere warmer, where you don’t get below freezing temperatures you might see scarves as a trendy item. Particularly the big blanket scarf styles. However, for someone like me scarves are not a trend they are a must have winter accessory. If you live somewhere warm you might want to stick with a thiner style blanket scarf as opposed to the chunkier, bulkier styles.
Scarves finish an outfit
While scarves aren’t to be worn just as a fashion statement they can complete your over all look. I always feel more pulled together when I put on a scarf.
Scarves are an easy way to add a pop of colour or to compliment the colours of your coat. They are a less intimidating way to add pattern too.
Now that we have figured out why we wear scarves (warmth and style) we can determine if blanket scarves are still in style for 2020.
I think it breaks down to where you live. If you live in a colder climate big oversized scarves are more of a classic winter accessory. If you live somewhere warmer where a big chunky scarf serves little purpose you might want to wear something thinner and less bulky. People in warmer climates might see a scarf as unecessary let alone a blanket scarf with all that extra fabric. So blanket scarves could be both timeless and over at the same time. Personally I am not going to quit blanket scarves any time soon.
What do you think? Are you still into blanket scarves?
