Before I took off to the cottage I got a chance to check out a new Toronto based business that is bringing the dress back for women.
Lemon Drop is doing for the dress what indi denim did for the jean; giving ladies a custom fit experience long provided to Men via bespoke tailors.
Lemon Drop is trying to take a concept that has been popular with custom mens shirts (like Maxwells). Instead of in home Trunk Shows like Stella & Dot stylists host, Lemon Drop is going to host 3 day Pop Up shops where you can see the product, get measured and choose your fabrics.
There are around 27 distinct measurements that need to be done because unlike a bridal party dress where you take a couple of measurements but essentially end up with a dress off the rack, a Lemon Drop dress is manufactured for you alone.
Like those men who line up to get a chance at having a custom mens shirt, Lemon Drop envisions their target market is the professional woman who wants an alternative to the classic black suit for her professional attire.
But the dresses are so much more than a great alternative for work. Their day dresses would be great for attending a wedding, or a charity event. There are even little girl versions of the dresses so you could have a coordinated family photo.
Prices are in line with what you would pay for a suit, actually a relatively in expensive suit. In fact you would pay more for the aforementioned off the rack bridesmaid dress that you would have to have altered when it arrived.
The turn around time is super quick at 3 weeks. My husband has waited 2 months for a Maxwells shirt.
What I think is great is although there are other international brands doing custom day wear like Moodbyme from whom you can order everything from a custom trench coat, blazers to brogues, no one is doing dresses and Lemon Drop does them well.
