Drunk Elephant seems to be the skin care brand darling right now but I am always skepitcal when a brand seems to be everywhere. Usually that means plenty of gifted product and maybe not as much brand loyalty. I mean the packaging is on point and I like the premise but does it work beyond the catchy name? I decided to drink the Drunk Elephant Kool-aid and test out a range of their products to see what the fuss was all about. This is my Drunk Elephant review.
Let me start out by saying that Drunk Elephant products are not inexpensive. I wanted to try these out without seriously investing. Who wants to drop serious cash on a product you don’t like? Samples and travel sized products are perfect for trying out a brand without over committing. I chose the Littles Kit and the Baby Pekee and Juju bar travel duo. This allowed me to test out a range of Drunk Elephant products.
The premise behind Drunk Elephant is that all the products are completely free from frangrance, essential oils, silicones and irritants. As someone who is scent senstive and has senstive skin this is exactly the type of product I usually go for. I can handle light natural smells but anything that is too perfumey (which includes essential oils) is too much for me to handle and usually leads to headaches. So from the whole clean beauty perspective Drunk Elephant is a great product line.
That being said they aren’t the only brand doing this right now so I already had some products I have been using for the last year or so that were working great and are what I can compare to this line. While I can safely say everything in this line is pretty fantastic, there are some products that I feel are must buys. I am going to rank everything from my most favourite to least favourite below in my Drunk Elephant Review.
Drunk Elephant Review
C Firma Day Serum – If I had to recommend just one Drunk Elephant product this would be it. It doesn’t smell good, but you do get used to it. It smells a bit like old orange juice and bonfire mixed together. I have never tried a serum and to be honest never really thought to add one to my daily regeim but this makes my skin feel tighter, smoother and any imperfections just seem to shrink. It is a bit tingly but not stinging.
Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense – anyone who has ever used a mineral sunscreen knows that they can be hard to absorb into the skin and often leave a white residue. I had thought that was just what you get with a zinc based non chemical sunscreen. Boy was I wrong. This one is so easy to blend into your skin. No white residue, no greasy feel. I used this every day on my face while we were on vacation. It felt so great, more like my favourite moisturizer than a sunscreen. A must have.
TLC Framboos Glycolic Night Serum – I feel like this is the partner product to the day serum. It is a very gentle exfoliant allowing for clearer more even looking complextion. This also has a tingly sensation when I put it on and while I don’t feel the results of this one so obviously as the Day serum it also leaves my skin feeling smoother with fewer imperfections.
Ok so those are my Top Three Drunk Elephant products. They are the ones that I will likely buy again in the full size versions to use regularly. The rest of these products I like well enough but I feel like I already have something in my skin care aresenal that works just as good.
Shaba Complex Eye Serum – This is a pretty good eye cream, one that I can say I saw some decent results from, however I prefer the Deciem Niod eye product as I feel it can more easily be layered up depending on how puffy your eyes are on any given day. That said it is more of an eye cream geared to fighting wrinkles and signs of aging around the eyes. I did notice increased firmness using this but just not to the same degree as the Deciem oil.
Lala Retro Whipped Cream – ok first off this is a fantastic moisturizer. In fact all of the ones I tried here were good. At first I thought it was a bit much to layer them all together. Serum, marula oil, the gel and then this whipped cream. However my skin felt amazing, like baby skin when I did that. The only reason this isn’t a favourite is that I have a few other products that work just as well. I feel like First Aid Beauty Ultra repair cream is great and more affordable. This fresh mask makes my skin feel just as soft as the 3 layered Drunk Elephant mositurizers and I also really like the Rodial Bee Venom moisturizer.
B Hydra Intesive Hydration gel – This moisturizer is unlike one I have tried before. It is very lightweight and it does feel like a good moisturizer. It absorbs very quickly and doesn’t feel greasy at all. My issue with it is that on it’s own it doesn’t feel like enough for me. It is good mixed with the marula oil. I prefer this First Aid Beauty daily moisturizer instead.
Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil – this is another product that I would never have picked up on my own but I was pleasantly surprised by this as I got used to using it more. Mixing it with the night serum keeps the serum from stinging my skin as much. Mixing it with the B Hydra gel gives it a bit more oomph. It absorbs fast and is not greasy. I really liked it while I was on vacation when my skin needed added moisture after being in the sun and pool all day. Whereas before I was on vacation I found it to be more than I needed and it took longer to absorb. Still it left my skin feeling very soft. This product on its own is ok but when mixed with other Drunk Elephant products is where it shines.
Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser – this is an ultra gentle cleanser that is gentle enough to use on your eyes and get to your eye makeup. It cleans with out stripping or drying out. There is nothing wrong with this cleanser but I prefer the Exfolikate cleanser and my makeup eraser (reviewed here).
Baby Pekee & Juju bar – The Juju bar is exfoliating while the Pekee bar is more gentle. Both feel really nice on the skin. I must be a bit old school I like a bar of soap for cleansing. These do not strip or dry the skin out. Still I prefer the Exfolikate cleanser.
So that is my very long Drunk Elephant review. I found some really great products and some other good products. I think if you have problem skin you should try this line. It is very gentle and your skin will feel great using these products. Many of them however are pricey so I feel like picking and choosing the best items will make you happier with your Drunk Elephant choices.
