Everlane first came to my attention back in 2014 with their Modern Loafer that basically put the company on the map. Before then Everlane was known for basic tees. Their pointed toe loafer took the company to a new level of coolness. Now five years later Everlane is embracing all things 90’s with their new square toe loafer. I was gifted a pair to review and try out. This is my Everlane ’90s Loafer review.
Everlane ’90s Loafer Review
Everlane sent me a pair of the bone crocodile square toe loafers. I like the shape. I love the moc croc. This loafer style comes in four colours. In addition to the bone croc I have it also comes in brown croc. Then there are two colours of nappa leather, blush and black, as well.
The ’90s Loafer is pretty similar to the Modern loafer but instead of the almond shaped pointed toe it has a more elongated narrow squared toe.
However when I put on my old Modern Loafers and compare them to the ’90s Loafer it is easier to see their differences. The leathers are very different. The 90’s loafer is more stiff. I found it broke in fairly easily across the widest part of my foot. But I did have blisters on my heel as the leather is noticeably stiff there. The loafers will require more regular wear to break them in properly.
The heel on the 90’s loafer has a different look to it as it has a circular heel. This is a sleeker look compared to the chunkier square heel that you find on classic loafers. Over all this heel paired with the stiffer sleeker leather gives a really modern look to the loafer over all.
The 90’s loafer appears longer on the foot, but ultimately it fits pretty much the same to the Modern Loafer. I would suggest sizing up at least half a size from the LARGEST shoe size you wear. I wear an 8.5 in Everlane loafers.
Overall I really like the shape of the square toe ’90s loafer but I prefer the leather on the modern loafer. The ’90s Loafer leather is stiffer and takes more effort to break in especially around the heel. However, the Modern Loafer is softer leather. The way the Modern Loafer is finished at the seams adds cushioning, making it easier on the back of the heels.
While these aren’t my favourite shoes from Everlane, the moc croc and square toe makes them relevant. The round heel adds a bit of style. The drawback is the stiff leather giving these shoes a longer break in.
What do you think of the Square toe 90’s Loafer from Everlane?
