Early last month we did a long weekend trip to Iceland. It was a package trip through Icelandair with the air, accommodations and tour included. While the breakfast was included with the room the rest of our meals were up to us. Iceland can be very expensive to eat out so I thought I would share everywhere we ate in Iceland.
Everywhere we ate in Iceland
We stayed at the Fosshotel Reykjavik which is slightly outside the main tourist district but still super walkable to everything. The buffet breakfast was included with the package and I ate a variation of the plate above every day. The home fries are a bit different than what we are used to in North America because they are more like vegetable mix as opposed to just potato.
Lunches we ate on the go. We went to the grocery store and picked up bread, cold cuts and bottled water. Bonus is the grocery store we liked. It is easy to find because it has the big pink pig on it!
Dinners we ate out. Now keep in mind food is expensive in Iceland. $30 for a burger is fairly normal. Which means more elaborate dinners are quite pricey. We stuck to pub type places as they were more affordable than the restaurants that served Icelandic dishes. While there weren’t really any American chains (or not many) I would say there was quite a bit of American or British style food choices.
Reykjavik Chips
When I was searching up places to eat in Reykjavik this one was top rated. There are tables to eat in but it is pretty small. The fries were so good. Usually I don’t love thick cut fries but these were crispy and delicious. At a minimum get the fries and pick some dipping sauces.
In addition I had the BBQ burger and it was also delicious. Messy but delicious. My Husband had the fish and chips. One thing I would note is that we could have gotten away with one order of fries. With each of us having our own serving of fries we had leftovers. And the leftovers weren’t really eaten that much so it was a waste. So if you are on a budget keep in mind that the portions of fries are quite large so you can share.
BrewDog Reykjavik
BrewDog is a franchise from the United Kingdom. Started in Scotland there are locations all over the UK, some in the US, Europe and Asia. It did not feel like a chain though (maybe because they are not in Canada?) and the food was excellent. I did find pub food to be of a much higher quality than what we are used to in North America when we were in London and I think that is the case with BrewDog Reykjavik as well.
Before I get into what we ordered for dinner I do want to point out one thing. Pepsi is hugely popular in Iceland. Everywhere we ate Pepsi was on the menu not Coke. If you are Coke drinkers (like us) then be prepared for it not to be offered. BrewDog didn’t have Pepsi or coke but had some other cola drink. This is when I tried Appelsin. It is an orange pop more like Orange crush. It was quite good and I would recommend trying especially if you are over Pepsi!
My Husband had chicken parmesan which was good but note that it does not come with pasta as we are used to in North America. It was just the chicken on its own. I had the Lambstrami. I wanted to try something Iceland was known for like fish or lamb and this sandwich did not disappoint. I would say the fries were better at Reykjavik chips though.
Dirty Burger and Ribs
The last place we ate for dinner was Dirty Burger and Ribs. It was more of a fast food place compared with the previous options but it was also cheaper. The food was good but not as good as the other two restaurants I listed. This place is in one of the main tourist strips, but it was kinda far from our hotel.
And that is everywhere we ate in Iceland. As I said at the beginning it was kind of a whirlwind trip. The fourth day we had some dinner at the airport (the pizza which was ok but not as flavourful as I would have thought).
Have you been to Iceland? Do you have a place to recommend? Share it in the comments!
