I am not sure if it is the January blues, whether it is just so cold or I am just so swamped at work, but lately my style isn’t really what I have been focusing on. I have been wearing my parka non stop just to stay warm and cozy.
My husband has been working on a major house project and it has been shifting my focus to home decor. He is getting closer and closer to fishing our basement and once that is complete our current family room furniture will move to the basement. With two young kids the couch has seen better days, and we have some IKEA chairs that while comfortable aren’t exactly super stylish.
I am really excited about picking some great colours for the basement and creating a glam downstairs bathroom, but for the most part the basement is still going to be somewhere where there are toys and workout machines take center stage.
Our family room on the main floor however is in for a major overhaul. These are my family room update ideas.
Shop my Family Room Update Ideas:
- Madison Home 2 Tone Mid Century Sleeper Sofa – One thing I am pretty adamant about is a grey sofa. We have been living with a dark brown one for over 5 years and it is so not my favourite. What I am unsure about is if I stick with something clean and comfortable like this custom option or one with more design elements.
- Wayfair Custom Upholstery Caroline Sofa – We currently have a sectional so I want to make sure that we continue to have at least the same amount of seating. Especially since our kids are getting bigger and taking up more room every day it seems. Two full sofas would allow us to get a bit more room and separate sitting areas for each of us.
- Wayfair Custom Upholstery Josephine Arm Chair – One thing I have always wanted was an oversized chair. I love the feminine feel of this one. I think that I will stick with a more clean and modern looking couch but try something with lots of fun details in a chair size.
- Linon Isabelle Square Tufted Ottoman – Another way to add some feminine details with out making a family room too girly is through one of these tufted ottomans. I have seen some options locally at Homesense but this would be the perfect size to double as a coffee table.
- Safavieh Adirondack Ivory & Silver Area Rug – One thing that I want to do this time around is add an area rug to our family room. Right now it is just our wood floor but I think a rug would tie the area together so much more. I love the idea of a gray, navy and cream pallet.
- Jada Sunburst Wall Mirror, Gold – We have been in this house for over a year and I still have some pretty major bare walls. The issue is I don’t want to waste money filling the walls with stuff I don’t love. I took some time this summer and created a great gallery wall of pictures of my kids but I still haven’t finished the other wall. I think instead of one big piece I need to break the wall into thirds. This starbust mirror would be perfect for one of the sections.
- Valerie Tovar, Pink Lemonade II – One of the thirds needs to be a great work of art. I love this modern piece that would add some colour to the room.
- Woodland Imports Superb End Table – I usually stick with wood furniture but this gold end table would be a great change of pace.
- Mali Indigo Blues Pillow – This is the exact shade of blue that I want to accent the room with. It pares so well with gray!
- Three Posts Rye Console Table – I have toyed with the idea of putting a console table behind our couch just to add some visual interest but also practically for everyone to have somewhere to place their glass.
- ChinShu Rosemont End Table – Maybe a more traditional take on an end table; I really like the pedestal on this option.
