Halloween is fast approaching and I have been slowly pulling our decorations out of the basement to get our house spookified in time for October 31st.
When it comes to costumes, we tend to re-purpose items from our dress-up stash or our everyday wardrobes instead of buying new costumes just for Halloween. The last time I took my daughter trick-or-treating, I dressed up as a cat using my vintage animal-print coat and some cat ears.
I was invited to shop Value Village’s Halloween selection and tasked to find everything we needed to have a perfect Halloween.
Encouraged by my daughter’s complaints that I never dress up with them for Halloween, (in the last couple of years I’ve stuck with costume free candy dispensing duties), I decided to find some fun items to create a new Halloween costume.
At first we wandered through the rows of new costumes and accessories. The first thing we picked up was a wig reminiscent of Elsa from Frozen. We already had the other Elsa costume elements at home but the wing really does take it to the next level!
My daughter also spent a lot of time looking at the Monster High wigs – for those with kids into Monster High we saw wigs for Frankie Stein, Draculaura, Clawdeen and Abby Bomidable.
She also tried to talk me into getting the adult sized Snow White costume so that we could do a Mommy and Me Halloween twin look.
We were approached a few times by Value Village employees dressed in costume to see if we needed help. They were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic without being over bearing.
In addition to the section of new costumes and accessories, the aisles of used clothing were getting the Halloween treatment as well.
Rows of jeans with all the fixings to turn them into the perfect hippie costume. There was even a minion costume created from a pair of old overalls and a yellow hoodie! I thought it was such a good idea and so easy to recreate for adults or kids.
I saw real furs that would make the perfect topper for a Margot Tannenbaum costume and almost picked up a red trench coat to create my own Carmen Sandiego look.
But I kept going back to all the new Halloween accessories. I was impressed by the seemingly endless selection of wigs and makeup and hats that really make the costumes extra special.
In the end I created something totally new, I was wearing my striped coat and looking at the clown hats and came up with this Fashionista Clown, mixing my own clothing with some fun things I found at Value Village.
