It’s that time of year when we all make plans for the new year. Setting goals, making resolutions and doing our best to follow through. Even if we might fall off the wagon by February. There have been many years where I haven’t bothered with setting goals for the year. And to me that is totally fine. Maybe you are still working through some old goals you set or are just not in the frame of mind for setting resolutions. Most of the time I find it pretty arbitrary that we prioritize resolutions for the new year. I mean I want to try to be healthier all year round! So if I set some goals in November they are just as relevant as something I would set at the New Year.
Despite all that, this year I have two major goals for 2019 that I hope that I can stick to all year long. Overindulgence at the end of the year really is influencing my goals for 2019.
- Minimize spending on clothing – lately I have noticed that I have been talking myself out of spending more than I have been talking myself into spending. I have a full closet. I don’t NEED anything. Shopping has become more of an activity rather than something we do to fill a need. I could try to commit to some gimmick of a shopping ban but usually I fail at those quite miserably. Instead I want to be mindful when it comes to shopping. Buying to replace things or to improve upon what I have. To buy interesting things I am going to wear. Steer clear of trendy items only worn once or for the blog. Blogging really does seem to emphasize this whole regular shopping and always buying thing since we tend to want to have pieces that can be linked to affiliates. I want to get back into the remixing and rewearing of what I have instead of always showcasing the new. I particularly want to make sure that the first quarter I spend as little on new clothes as possible. I find myself getting excited about spring clothes long before I can actually wear them. It makes more sense to wait until spring, audit my closet and then buy accordingly.
- Get back into working out – I was absolute crap at keeping up with working out in 2018. I did make sure to get in my morning walk for most of the year but even that has fallen by the wayside at this point. It is time to do something drastic to get back into regular fitness and slim down in the process. I want to test out a few of the buzzy workout systems that are talked about right now. Many of them are talked up by people that are generally fairly thin to begin with whereas I would like to provide my input from a different perspective.
The only thing that is holding me back right now is getting sick over Christmas holidays. I find it harder to stick with working out and healthy eating when I am congested with a cold.
The no shopping thing is going well so far. But I really haven’t had much time to implement.
I want to hold myself accountable. So instead of haul posts I want to do monthly updates on how my fitness and mindful shopping is going. Hopefully it will be interesting to keep on top of and hopefully I stick with it all year long. I might have to adopt a content calendar so that I remember to stick with everything!

Hi Jane, I hear you re. end-of-year overindulgence! Even though I had quite a good year exercise-wise, it all went to pot in the last month and I feel that when I return to the gym I'll be starting from the beginning again! My gym buddy and I have decided to book a few sessions with the personal trainer to get things started. I'd love to read your monthly updates. As for shopping, for a while I have been trying to up the quality of the clothes I buy, so I'll keep with that - buy less often, but better. (Having said that, last week I bought 4 pairs of cords on sale at Joe Fresh, since a sweater and cords is my winter uniform - baby steps!) Health-wise I also want to sleep more - I'm a terrible night owl and really need to change that.

Ohhh these are good ones. I should add that in my idea around mindful shopping try to buy better quality and less from brands that are always going to the thrift store especially after one season. I do find that if I buy a bit better quality I love that item and wear it more often whereas if I buy the cheapie version it isn't quite what I wanted and I end up not loving it as much. But both can backfire in that the cheap version can be amazing sometimes and the expensive one be not really worth the money. Joe Fresh was one of those places where I was sending so much of what I bought to the thrift. So unless the quality is there I just don't do it anymore. BUT I do really like their workout range I think it is just as good as some of the more expensive stuff. Happy New Year!

Those are sensible, achievable goals. Good for you. I have the same resolution as last year, it's probably an age related thing. Before I go to sleep every night I count my blessings. I go over everything I am thankful for from family and health to living in Canada and all the perks that brings i.e. healthcare system, opportunities, no wars, clean water etc.

I like that goal. Giving thanks daily puts things into perspective! I think as we age our priorities shift. Happy 2019!
