We travelled from Ontario Canada to Mallorca Spain last spring. While Canadian airlines fly direct to many European cities they do not fly direct to Mallorca. I personally would always pay a bit more for a direct flight but in this case it was not an option. This is how to get to Mallorca from Canada.
Why go to Mallorca?
Before I get into how to get to Mallorca lets talk about why go to Mallorca because it really isn’t the obvious choice for Canadians. Almost every time I said where we were going I had to explain where Mallorca is on the map. That it is part of Spain and is a sister island to Ibiza.
For an island vacation Canadians are more likely to fly to the Dominica Republic or other Caribbean islands than to Mallorca. Or if we are heading to Europe to go to a major city like Barcelona, Paris or London.
If that is the case why did I get obsessed with going to Mallorca? Well I would have to say British TV definitely influenced me. Shows like A Place the Sun and the Mallorca Files absolutely helped bring awareness to the island. But also travel influencers based in Europe sharing their Mallorca vacations. Mallorca is very popular with British and German vacationers.
Once it was on my radar it became somewhere we could go and get the best of both worlds. We can visit the beach AND get the European city flavour. Not just because of Palma and the Mallorcan coast. But because you have to have a stopover somewhere before you fly to Mallorca from Canada.
How to get to Mallorca from Canada
I will share how we got to Mallorca first and then comment on some of the other options. We flew from Toronto to London UK first. We actually had a mini holiday in London for 3 days first before we flew to Mallorca. What I found was that flights to London were cheaper than say flying to Barcelona first. Lisbon would have been another option with a more inexpensive first leg.
After a few days sightseeing in London we got back on the plane, this time for an Easyjet flight. While we have low cost carriers in Canada they really aren’t as prolific as they are in Europe. I did have to upgrade from a basic flight because we had carryon luggage. But with the package I got us we got priority boarding and we were sitting at the front of the plane. And to be honest the Easyjet plane was way nicer and more comfortable than the Air Transat flight we took to London.
What amazed me the most was how short the flight was. A quick two hour flight and we were in Mallorca from London! No wonder people travel here for a long weekend. That flight is nothing. I wish I could get somewhere so cool after a 2 hour flight. It took us more than twice as long to get to Calgary for our Banff Trip. That is the vastness of Canada for you.
So while flying is the most obvious option, it isn’t the only option. You can also take a ferry from Barcelona. I can’t speak to how easy or good of an option it is but if you are already planning to visit Barcelona perhaps it is something to look into. Have you taken the Ferry to Mallorca? I really enjoyed out Mallorca vacation. While in some ways it felt similar to an all inclusive vacation when we were at the resort in Cala D’Or, it really was a very different beach vacation. Probably because it wasn’t JUST a beach vacation. I would go back. The island is so big we could just pick a different town and have a completely different experience.
