I have had this belted navy coat in my closet for a bunch of years. It is one of my most worn coats because it fits over everything (thank you big loose sleeves) and works for a range of temperatures.
One thing I have noticed is many people head into these colder months and wear the same exact fairly safe combination of coat and accessories. I am also amazed by how many people skip wearing accessories during winter! This is the easiest way to stay warm! And to add some versatility to your outfit without doing more than changing out your scarf.

Neutrals are an obvious place to start when it comes to accessorizing as they feel safe. Growing up I was told not to pair black and blue together. I don’t know why this black scarf looks great! Camel (this or this is similar) is another great choice as is grey. Navy would work too if you were going for a monochromatic look.
Plaids are a great way to add colour in a way you might feel more comfortable instead of committing to one bright scarf. This plaid has dark green, burgundy and bright blue. Any one of those colours would work on it’s own but somehow it feels easier as part of this plaid.
A check scarf is another way to play with colour without feeling out of your comfort zone. The bright blue and the purple both look great against the navy but mixed with the brown tones feels safer.
Last of the plaids I promise but I added these two to show that you can instantly Christmasify an outfit by adding the right plaid scarf. As long as the dominate colours are white, red and green you instantly look festive. Personally I prefer the red as it is a good colour for me and really pops against the navy.
Red is my happy colour. I tend to look better in bright jewel tones as opposed to softer versions of the same colours. I think part of this exercise is knowing what colours look good right up at your face. But at the same time if you love a colour that isn’t necessarily your best, wear it anyways because it makes you happy.
Burgundy and deep pinks are other colours that pair well with Navy. They are softer than the red but still pop against the navy.
The burgundy scarf is from Sezane and is mostly wool so more scratchy than I am used to as many of my scarves are acrylic or a wool blend.
The berry coloured scarf is the one I wore in this post. While I do like it with the navy I think it works even better with the greige colour.
Green and navy is such a classic preppy colour combination and you can see it works so well here!
I hope that you can see that the same outfit styled with different scarves can created such a different look. Also don’t be afraid of adding colour to a neutral coat. Pretty much EVERYTHING goes with navy. Sure some colours pack more punch, but you aren’t going to make a dire mistake trying something new. Adding a colourful scarf to your rotation will breath some life into your fall winter coats as the season drags on.
Many of my scarves are old. If they are still available I have linked to them or something similar.
Which combination is your favourite?
