Houndstooth is the pattern of alternating light and dark check on fabric. The most recognizable version is a black and white pattern but I have seen red and black, tonal light and dark brown and brown and black. I have a few coats in this pattern and I thought it could be helpful to share how to style a Houndstooth coat. I have styled each coat with a number of different accessories to show that there are loads of ways to wear a Houndstooth coat.
Houndstooth Coat and Black Accessories
The most obvious option to styling a houndstooth coat, especially one that has black included in the pattern is to pair it with black accessories. The black scarf goes with all three of these houndstooth coats popping against the pattern to various degrees.
Because black is a safe colour for so many of us I would say that starting with this option makes the most sense if you are just getting used to wearing a patterned coat.

Houndstooth coat and white accessories
White is another obvious choice especially for a black and white houndstooth coat outfit. For me I think I like the black better but the white also works.
Black and white patterned accessories with a Houndstooth coat
Ok this option I only styled with the classic black and white houndstooth wrap coat. The black and white houndstooth pattern is mirrored in the scarf but on a larger scale. This look is bolder than the others shown so far but I really like the look.
Houndstooth coat with red accessories
I am apt to pair red with pretty much everything so it is not surprising that red is one of my go to ways to style Houndstooth. I paired a plain long red scarf with my two brown houndstooth coats and I love the look. But I also tried a red plaid with my classic houndstooth coat. I think the reason it works is that the plaid is very big so it doesn’t come off as patterned when tied as more just multi-coloured. The plaid is also predominantly red with some black and white and a small amount of pink. So it works very similarly to a red scarf but pulls in the colours of the coat as well.
Houndstooth coat with Burgundy accessories
This burgundy scarf is a great alternative to the options above. It is a bit less obvious but still works. It almost blends in with the dark brown houndstooth while it pops more against the other two coats.
Bold colour with a Houndstooth coat
The last option is a bright blue scarf with the classic houndstooth coat. But it really isn’t the last option. This just illustrates that you can pair bold colour with this kind of coat. It could be hot pink, lime green, kelly green or purple. A bright colour that is your colour is a great option to wear because it is close to your face brining brightness not only to your outfit but to you!
All I can say is when you are figuring out how to style a Houndstooth Coat you can play around. Try on what you have and see what works. The options I have shown here are no fail options but they are not the only options. If you have a non traditional houndstooth coat try pulling one of the colours from the pattern and using that as inspiration. For example I could try a camel colour scarf with the brown coat to get a tonal look. Don’t be afraid of playing with pattern on pattern too because depending on the size of your houndstooth it will look like one dominant colour from far away.
Much of what I am wearing in the post is old. However I will share links of what I can.
