Maternity Monday; Mexx Maternity Jeans

It’s getting harder and harder for me to camouflage the fact that I am pregnant with our second child. And while the last thing I want this to turn into is a Mommy blog where all that I talk about is babies and diapers, I need to talk about what I am experiencing.

So when I faced the fact that I needed another pair of Maternity jeans I weighed all my Toronto Maternity shopping options.

There are a bunch of maternity specialty boutiques around Toronto and they carry an array of denim including maternity versions of premium denim brands. I lucked out during my first pregnancy and scored a pair of fairly expensive maternity jeans for only $60 at Kick on Eglinton. Since I was working full-time through that pregnancy one pair of jeans was really all I needed because I was only wearing them a couple of times a week.

This time around however I am at home. And Maternity business clothes really aren’t cutting it for my stay at home mommy lifestyle. It also means I have less disposable income so I had to check out some of the bargain maternity options around the city.

I was surprised to see, albeit super small, a selection of maternity jeans and tops at Zara. The jeans were very casual though and not really what I needed. I had already scoped out Old Navy and H&M and didn’t find jeans that I wanted. I wanted the look of premium denim without the price tag.

So I popped into Mexx at Yorkdale and was thrilled that they were carrying Maternity at this location. Didn’t know that Mexx had maternity – you are not alone. From what I can tell Mexx has been carrying Maternity for about a year and they have a nice selection of work wear and casual pieces much like their standard collection.

This is great news for working expecting mothers on a budget because most of the professional maternity selection was at the higher end maternity boutiques.

I found a great pair of wide legged dark denim at Mexx. One thing I noticed was that they didn’t have an adjustable waistband. Much like toddler pants, my other maternity jeans have an elastic band that can be adjusted as you grow  and then lose again after you give birth. This feature is great when you are early in your pregnancy and your regular jeans don’t fit but you don’t have a big belly for the maternity panel to hold onto.

That said these Mexx jeans are perfect for second and third trimesters when you are obviously pregnant. I am in my second trimester and I have room to accommodate my belly and body growth.

The jeans retail for around $70, so the price is in line with say Gap jeans.

I just came across your site while I was googling maternity clothes - I had no idea Mexx sold maternity - this is great!! Are there any other places you would recommend? I have a few weddings this summer and so I'm looking for a nice maternity dress that I can hopefully wear for all of them (maybe use different accessories) and will still look somewhat stylish. Thanks!! a

Hi Alisha, I have lots of suggestions for Toronto Maternity shopping on my main site. Keep in mind that if you shop wrap or styles with an empire waist you could get away with non-maternity for dresses. In fact it is so hot today I am wearing a non maternity sundress today and it still covers my 5mo along belly well.
