It’s a New Year and that means resolutions. Whether we stick to them closely or not creating resolutions is a way for us to figure out what things we want to work on about ourselves.
I have come up with 5 shopping resolutions that reflect how I want to change how I shop and what I wear in 2011.
The first thing I want to work on for 2011 is shopping in outfits.
This is something that I struggle with when building my wardrobe. I often buy a top or shoes just because I love them. When I get these pieces home I sometimes have a hard time putting them together with other items in my closet. Sure I can pair almost anything with jeans or black trousers but it is the finishing pieces that are harder to match.
Instead of having a mismatched wardrobe I am going to go through my closet and perform a gap analysis. This means I will look for holes or missing pieces to complete outfits. It is also a great time to recycle clothing I no longer wear.
I know it sounds a bit tedious but I also plan on writing out what those missing pieces are so that I have a completion list in my purse for when I go shopping in the future. This will keep me on track for upcoming purchases.
It is assuming alot that I will only shop for these completion pieces but after reviewing my wardrobe it will be easier to visualize what I already have and create the virtual outfit in my mind. This doesn’t always work out as planed. If what you have imagined and what the outfit looks in real life aren’t the same consider returning the piece you bought. Or work on creating other outfits with the item. If you end up with something that is flattering and you love you are set. If the item really doesn’t work it might have to go back to the store.
One way to avoid having mismatched or incomplete outfits is to create and outfit from head to toe while you are out shopping. This can be an expensive endeavor though and realistically you want everything in your wardrobe to work with more than just one outfit.
Shopping in outfits is something I am going to work on in 2011. I am not sure how it will work out but I am looking forward to auditing my closet to find out where the gaps are and recycle what I don’t wear any longer.

I like the idea of taking pictures, it would be great to make your own look book!

Great plan! I was actually doing a whole whack of laundry yesterday and decded as I was folding to take pictures of each item before I put it away. I'm going to try to do this slowly so that I have an inventory of what I have and I can see from the pictures what would work together and what won't.
