I was invited to Raindrops Toronto to find out more about the winter coat brands they carry in store. Raindrops is known as THE place in Toronto to find rain wear, umbrellas, boots. Especially when it is actually raining and all the other stores rain gear seems to have disappeared.
But they do do seasonal wear as well which means they have a great assortment of winter coats and winter lined rain boots (perfect for slushy streets).
There are a mixture of synthetic fill and goose down coats, but all the styles are made to handle all the winter weather that is thrown at us. There isn’t any wool styles but rather well cut parkas.
The above red coat is the Nachelle coat from Nivo. Nivo is a Canadian company but the coats are made overseas. It was the lightest of the coats I tried on and the one I felt fit my shape the best. I love the red, a great colour to break through the sea of black you see throughout the city in the winter.
Of all the coats I tried this was the most true to size and retails for $425.
The next coat I tried on was the Alister coat from Creenstone. It had a waxy finish that almost gives it a leather look. What drew me to the coat was the gorgeous faux fur lining that is removable giving this coat life beyond the winter season. Lots of pockets and zips, plus a nice nip at the waist feature with the buttons that can let in and out depending on how layered you get.
I could have probably gotten away with sizing down. This coat had room in the shoulders and was long in the sleeves for me and I had room when I cinched the waist.
If you are looking for a black coat that can still stand out this is definitely an option. This coat could also be worn in dressier situations and not look odd. I believe this one retails for $825.
This coat is by Quartz Nature and was the most dense of the coats I tried on. It is down filled and Made in Canada. The fur trim on the hood is real and this coat is definitely one that could give Canada Goose a run for their money. What I liked about the coat is the fantastic pocket details. I did find the cuffs a bit tight on this coat and they fit large as I sized down in this style. This coat retails for $750.
This was a gorgeous coat. Aigle is a french brand best known for their rubber rainboots that are Made in France. This was another down coat and reminded me of the coats you see women wearing at the base of Mont Tremblant. The fur trim on the hood is real and I thought the brown leather details really made this coat. It fits small so you might need to size up in this brand.
There is a selection of men’s winter coat styles as well. They range from warmer business appropriate styles that would be great for the office commute to more fashion forward styles for the discerning man.
Raindrops also has winter accessories like hats and mittens. I thought this turban style was really fantastic and fashion forward.
There is also a wide range for kids. One of the brands has a fantastic feature to open the seams to pull out an additional 1.5 inches of additional arm length and 2 more inches of leg in the snow pants. These brands do retail for more than what many of the fast fashion brand retail their snow suits for but you should be able to get more wear out of these thereby decreasing the cost per wear.
I thought the kids winter lined rain boots were not only fantastic looking but a great option for winter in the city. Raindrops also had Aigle winter lined rubber boots for women.

Oh wow! This is exactly the store I needed a few months ago when my fiance and I were looking for jackets! We ended up going to Sporting Life at Sherway which also has a good selection. A lot of the brands you mention here I don't think I saw at Sporting Life so it's nice to know there's another place with a different selection.
