Back before Christmas I picked up a few of the new(ish) Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm lip pencils at Target. I am all about matte lipstick lately hence my love affair with Nars but don’t always want to pay top dollar for a good lipstick. Sometimes trying drug store lipsticks can be disappointing, but these are great value for the money. The first thing I thought of when I saw the Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm lip pencil’s in the display was that they were kinda like a Clinique Chubby stick. But I ended up liking these more as I like how they go on smooth and creamy but dry matte.
The Revlon version does have peppermint oil in the formulation so if you dislike peppermint you are going to want to skip these. I love it, feels fresh and tingly.
The pigmentation of the Revlon Colorburst Matte Blams is great. They do go on more sheer with the first swipe than my matte lipsticks, which is great if you are looking for something less in your face for day, but they layer up really well to give a great full colour.
I was surprised to find that the Revlon Matte Balm in Striking is actually a pretty decent dupe for Nars Heat Wave. And then not really surprised because I seem to always buy the same colours!! Still you can see above they are both a great orangy red. Heat Wave looks slightly more red here on my arm but really I think what we are seeing here is more to do with differences in the formulation than a strong colour difference.
Nars is more matte than the Revlon Matte Balm, and while the Matte Balm has nice pigmentation I do not think that it wears as well. When it wares off I don’t see as much of an even stain left over so reapplication is necessary. It was really obvious when washing off the swatches, the Revlon Matte Balm comes off alot easier than the Nars Heat Wave.
I thought the Revlon Matte Balm in Showy would be a dupe for Nars Schiap but it is not. Schiap is a slightly darker more berry hot pink while Revlon Showy is a lighter more blue undertone (almost icy-ier if that makes sense).
I thought for the money these were a great prodcut. I will totally be trying more colours. Audacious and Sultry are high on my list to try. Check out more of the colours in the collection here.
Have you tried the Revlon Colorburst Matte Balms? What did you think?

I love the colors you picked out and might have to try them out. I've always been wary of matte lipstick, but am intrigued by the fact that you said these are a little more sheer and go on a bit creamier. Thanks for the review!

For sure try them out. They are alot creamier too than some matte lipsticks that can be very dry. I have a couple layers on my lips in the pictures in this post. Plus for the price even if it isn't the best lipstick in your mind at least you didn't pay $30 ++

Oh I really like the sound of these! While I usually don't buy drugstore makeup, Revlon is the one exception to that rule. I really do love their products, especially their lipsticks! I'm definitely going to try these out!

Totally agree. I usually am disappointed with drug store makeup (save these and some products by Rimmel) but was really impressed with this product. Will be back for more.
