Airport style is more that just dressing comfortably to sit on a plane for a few hours. It is balancing comfort with style and practicality. Because your airport outfit is more than just what you are wearing on the plane it is an extension of your vacation wardrobe.
One of the biggest challenges I find for travelling to a warm location when it has turned cold here in Canada is bringing items along that will have NO USE to me on vacation.
So this is why I ditch my winter coat. If it is super cold or snowing I will for sure wear some boots and coat to get to the airport. But I will ditch it in the car and put on something lighter, whether it be a sweater coat or trench. I want something that isn’t going to weigh me down if I am carrying it through the airport, nor over heat if I am wearing it through the airport.
Airport Style Essentials:
- Wear a light jacket, blazer or sweater coat instead of a parka.
- Wear comfortable trousers, jeans with stretch or a ponte pant.
- Wear a scarf that can double as a sarong for the beach.
- Carry a bag that can handle all your magazines, ipad, extra outfit, but can also double as a beach bag.
- Wear easy on and off flats to get you through security and all that airport walking.
- Pack or wear a light knit. Think cotton blend or merino wool.
- Bring your hat – don’t let it get squished in your suitcase!
So lets break down those airport style essentials. I already mentioned why I don’t carry around a bulky winter coat. Sure if I am going somewhere just as cold as Canada it makes sense but otherwise a lighter jacket, blazer or sweater is a better idea.
Comfortable pants are a must. The last thing you want to have to deal with 2 hours into a flight is a too tight waistband or pants that don’t give. I would highly recommend the madewell jeans I have on above. They have a great amount of stretch and are just as comfortable as tights. If you are going to wear tights remember that they aren’t pants and as such wear a tunic or longer tee so your tush isn’t jiggling all over the place. OR go with something in a ponte fabric (which is thicker and more pant like) like these or these.
To be honest I usually have just carried a leather tote, but I like the idea of using my beach bag for carry on because then I have more room in my suit case for an extra tee or two. A boho type bag is a great option for the beach as it plays into that whole laid back vibe.
I will be wearing my Theodora & Callum scarf not only because it is light but still big enough to keep me warm, but because it can be used as a sarong, or tied as a dress at the beach. Again using something as part of your airport outfit that can also be used at the beach saves space in your suitcase.
Flats are a no brainer. I like these slipper flats because they are easy on and off. Boots might seem like a good idea until you have to sit down and pull them off and then they are too hot for wherever you are jetting off. You could use that moment to switch into sandals but then you have to carry around boots until you get to your hotel room.

So a light knit of some sort is a no brainer. It doesn’t take up too much room in your bag or just throw it on under your jacket. Or instead of a jacket. The one I have on above is from Denise. It is more of a cape in that it doesn’t have any actual arm holes but perfectly drapes over the shoulders. And it is made in Mississauga.
I am pretty much guaranteed to bring along my sun hat as I really don’t want to pack it in my suitcase for fear it will be crushed. Alternatively I might stuff it with undies or bathing suits so that it keeps its shape while in the suitcase.
Watch for more packing tips in the next few weeks. I still have to tackle shoes, the carry on and my toiletries bag.
What do you wear to the airport?

Are these recent photos? We've had two snowstorms already and there's 10 cm of snow on the ground. I am jealous of your autumn.
Did I miss where you're going? I love your bag and your carry-on tips. Very practical!

These are recent photos! We probably won't have alot of snow here until December. Even then it can be touch and go as to whether the snow stays until January. We are heading off to Mexico soon!
